Earlier this month, USA Today updated its 2010 jobs growth forecast for each of the states and the District of Columbia. With zero job growth forecast for Wisconsin, we ranked 50th out of 51. That’s little wonder, having seen GM and Briggs and Stratton leave the state. Meanwhile Polaris and Fiskars are closing Wisconsin plants as Harley-Davidson considers whether to move.

The primary reason you and I are feeling this pain is because of reckless spending on the part of our Legislature. To pay for all of the new spending, our current senator voted with the majority to raise taxes and fees by nearly $5 billion in the latest budget cycle. Yet that won’t cover all of the spending. Last month the nonpartisan Wisconsin Tax-payers Alliance noted state debt rose to $11.25 billion last year, rising at a faster rate than the national debt. That is not being fiscally responsible.

I believe you deserve better. That’s the biggest reason I am running. We need real job growth. That can only happen with less spending and lower taxes. I know some folks think these huge tax increases only hit the rich or are so-called “talking points.” Here’s some food for thought, among the 15 different taxes and fees hiked last year was the tax on nursing home beds. This year, the tax on nursing home beds doubled to $150 per bed per month. And it will go up another $20 per bed per month next year. There’s no heart in that move.

Dads of Wisconsin: Endorses Ed Thompson
6/28/2010

Contact: Steve Blake

Dads of Wisconsin has endorsed Ed Thompson for the senate seat in the 31st district at their political action meeting on Saturday.

Two members of the Dads of Wisconsin board met with State Senatorial candidate Ed Thompson (R-31st) this past Thursday. Dads of Wisconsin is a group of men and women who want to support those running for public office who understand how important fathers are in children’s lives. They met with Mr. Thompson to discuss issues important to the group such as equal treatment in court concerning child placement after divorce or separation, move away issues, false accusations of domestic or child abuse in divorce proceedings and greater equity in general for both parents in family court disputes.

Steve Blake and Sharon Dillon from DoW met with the candidate for 40 minutes at his restaurant in Tomah, the TeePee Supper Club. “We were pleased that Ed really seemed to understand the problems that non-cu[s]todial parents can face, said Sharon Dillon, VP for public relations at DoW, “and he seems willing to work toward alleviating some of the suffering that children experience when deprived of their fathers”.

Ed Thompson has some fight left in him from his younger days but instead of taking the fight to a physical opponent, he’s taking the fight to Kathleen Vinehout. The former club boxer (retiring when he was 42) and Mayor of Tomah, Wisconsin has decided to take on one last bout, this time not in the boxing ring but the arena of State Politics. At stake is Wisconsin Senate District 31, a seat that Vinehout has held since 2006. A casual observer may think Ed has the added challenge of having to stand in the shadows of his big brother, former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, but his fighting background makes him stand out in his own right. To read entire article click here.

State GOP Senate candidate Ed Thompson is cut from a different mold than most of his Republican cohorts.

For one, Thompson is a former Libertarian candidate for governor. In 2002, he drew 10 percent of the vote, and many Republicans held a grudge against him for possibly swaying the election to Dem Jim Doyle, who was taking on incumbent GOP Gov. Scott McCallum.

Also, Thompson, the brother of former GOP Gov. Tommy Thompson, holds some positions that differ from many mainstream Republicans. To read entire article click here.

The Blair Press
April 29, 2010

BLAIR – Tomah’s mayor and long-time business owner Ed Thompson is running for Sen. Kathleen Vinehout’s seat in the November election.

The 65-year-old brother to former Governor Tommy Thompson is currently the only Republican seeking the post.

Ed Thompson owns the TeePee Supper Club in Tomah, which he has operated for 20 years.

He’s running because he’s “completely dissatisfied with what’s happening with our state budget,” he said in an interview with The Blair Press on Thursday.

“We’re legislating on [the verge] of bankruptcy,” he said.

Thompson noted that the state has a $62 billion budget for its 4 million residents.

“They (state lawmakers) continue to raise taxes – that’s not the answer.”

He noted that the state collects much more in sales and income taxes for rural counties like Trempealeau County, and little comes back.

“Rural Wisconsin is getting sick of supporting big cities,’ he said.

The Republican has signed a pledge not to vote for any legislation to raise taxes in any way.

“I guess my strongest belief is if you’re going to come to me with a new program, (then what program) are you going to eliminate?”

On the issue of school funding, he said the property tax rates are at their limits – there has to be another way to help fund schools.

He also noted that the Legislature continues to send unfunded mandates to local governments.

“That’s what I see going on in Madison that’s wrong,” he said.
